Girls Rock! Des Moines, is offering TWO, two-week long camps featuring instrument instruction, empowerment workshops, songwriting classes, band formation, live performances by visiting female artists, and a showcase concert that caps off the end of camp!  The entire camp is lead by women volunteers from all over the US!  We are extremely excited about our 2017 summer sessions!!  Come rock with us!


When and Where?

In 2017, we will have two sessions of camp, please make sure you are selecting the appropriate session.

Camp One

June 12-23rd  9am – 4pm // Monday - Friday

To be held at Merrill Middle School with a showcase at the Des Moines Social Club’s Kum & Go Theater on Friday the 23rd.

Camp Two

July 10-21st  9am – 4pm // Monday - Friday

To be held at Meredith Middle School with a final showcase performance at Wooly’s in the East Village on Friday July 21st.


Who May Apply for Camp?

Self identified, gender non-conforming and trans girls who will be between the ages of 10 and 16 during the camp session may apply for camp. No musical experience is necessary, and you don’t have to live in Des Moines to apply.

Note: Campers must be at least 10 years old at the time of camp to attend. No exceptions will be made.

Mentors and Counselors in Training

Mentors are GR!DSM members ages 14-16 who have attended camp at least one year. Mentors will be a liaison between our counselors and in-coming campers.  They will be forming their own mentor band and will perform at the end of camp showcase.

Counselors in Training are any past camper who have aged out (17 or older) and are interested in becoming a camp counselor or teacher.  Their role is to shadow the existing leadership roles and assist when needed.

Instrument Selection

Campers focus on one instrument to study. Campers are assigned to instruments based on availability and their requests. Applicants can request guitar, bass, drums, keyboards or vocals.  Please rank instruments according to your preference. 

Note: Due to the need to acquire the gear we need in advance, you cannot change your selection after you send in your application, and you cannot change the instrument you’re assigned before or during the camp session.

Camper Selection and Notification

Application for admission into the GR!DSM camps will be accepted until the allotted 40 slots/camp are filled.
